Who are we?

For our Special Research Program, researchers from four different institutions come together. Three experimental and two theory groups will tackle the tasks that come with the big goals we set for ourselves in their corresponding sub-projects. Several young researchers will be led in this endeavor by the Principal Investigators (PIs) of those groups. The groups will be supported in administrative tasks through an additional coordination project by the SFB office.

COMB.AT is centered around two pillars of research: nuclear spectroscopy and molecular spectroscopy.

The sub-project P2 “OAM-enabled transitions in CS-molecules” will be led by Oliver H. Heckl at the University of Vienna and is part of the molecular spectroscopy pillar. The second sub-project from this pillar is P3 “Interactions of Molecules with Twisted Light” led by Mikhail Lemeshko at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg.

In the nuclear spectroscopy pillar you can find the sub-project P4 “Ultrafast tailored light” led by Andrius Baltuska (Photonics Institute, TU Wien) and P5 “229Th nuclear spectroscopy in solid-state interactions of Molecules with Twisted Light”, led by Thorsten Schumm (Institute of Atomic and Subatomic Physics of TU Wien). The sub-project P6 “Nuclear excitation with twisted light combs” will be led by Adriana Palffy-Buß at the Institute for Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics of the Julius-Maximilians-Universität of Würzburg.

Most of our research groups are situated in Austria, in very close proximity to each other to ensure creating a basis for a stable network. The team of Adriana Palffy-Buß is situated in Germany. Through frequent meetings, exchange programs, and constant communication, we ensure that all information is transferred smoothly to all participating research teams.

The PIs will further be counseled by an expert advisory board, consisting of specialists from universities from all over the world. They will evaluate the scientific progress in the different sub-projects and give the PIs advice and input on scientific questions to ensure high-level research output.
